Advance Design and IDEA StatiCa Connection Workflow

 

For steel structures, Advance Design is an integrated software allowing to perform global FEM analysis, design and optimization of steel members, local analysis with check and optimization of standards 2D connections. When it comes to 2D or 3D complex steel connections, Advance Design can be completed with IDEA StatiCa Connection to handle such connections.

IDEA StatiCa Connection can design all types of 3D connections which cannot be designed with the connection module integrated in Advance Design. It provides precise checks, results of strength, stiffness and buckling analysis of a steel joint. Joints are checked according to Eurocodes, North American codes (EC & AISC), and many others.

Templates for most-used connections are available, as well as a wide range of predefined hot rolled and sheet welded members.

On this page you will find information on how to use Advance Design and IDEA StatiCa Connection. You will learn how to import joints from Advance Design and code-check them in IDEA StatiCa Connection.

  1. Open the Advance Design project containing steel members:

  1. Create generic connections in Model mode:

For each of connection, select all related members one by one or by a ‘capture zone’ and call the context menu Connections > Create/selection > Generic Joint; then, these symbols appear:

You can also create generic joints by using the  icon located on the Ribbon, Objects tab, Connections panel but using the context menu is easier.

  1. Run the FEM analysis:

Obviously, the elements must be correctly designed before studying the connections. After that, a simple FE calculation is enough to export the forces to IDEA StatiCa Connection.

  1. Export the connections at the same time in a unique IDEA StatiCa Connection project: select them, and then click the IDEA StatiCa Connection command located on the BIM tab of the Ribbon.

  1. The IDEA StatiCa Connection import wizard automatically appears. Click Next.

In the next dialog, you will preview each exported connection. If you have exported several connections, refresh the view by selecting the Zoom All command from the context menu corresponding to the graphic display area.

If some of the exported connections contain collinear members, you have the possibility to merge them like the purlins arriving on a rafter:

In some cases, the profiles from the Advance Design database and the ones from IDEA StatiCa Connection don’t match, mainly the hollow sections, due to the fact that their name differs.

So, you have the possibility to define a matching by using the   icon. This mapping is defined once for all the cases.

  1. On the next dialog box, you can see the imported Load Groups. Continue with the Next command.

  1. On the next dialog box, you can see the imported Combinations. Continue with the Next command.

  1. On the next dialog box, you can see the imported Result Classes. Continue with the Finish command after selecting the most unfavorable combination using the arrow buttons.

Automatic data transfer is finished and IDEA StatiCa Connection with the generated project is launched. All members and load effects were added automatically.
