Advance Steel 8.1
On December 1st 2007 GRAITEC launched the latest version of Advance Steel: 8.1
Developed for steel construction companies and design offices, Advance Steel is a software for steel structural modeling (profiles and connections) that automatically creates general arrangement drawings, fabrication drawings, bill of materials and NC files. Advance is integrated in the AutoCAD® platform.

What’s new in Advance Steel 8.1
Advance Steel 8.1 allows steelwork contractors to efficiently and easily design their structures. Complex structures, advanced automation for drawing creation, interoperability, etc. Advance Steel accelerates your daily work!
Modeling of complex parts
Creating a twisted folded plate has never been so easy!
Select 2 AutoCAD® polylines and the twisted folded plate is created between them!
- AutoCAD® entities (e.g., rectangle, circle, ellipse, etc.)
- Two bars (e.g., two columns with different diameters)
The drawing is automatically obtained!
New connections and improved automation
New connections and new options for existing connections are available:
Column splice
Turnbuckle macro
Metal work
Many new options in the metal work macros (e.g., curved handrail ends, etc.)
Galvanizing holes
The new connections allow the creation of galvanizing holes.
Improvements in connection creation
With the quick creation function for connections, users can create all the connections in their model with a single click (following the ASD, LRFD American standards).
New options for library entry
Library entry allows the use of special characters. For example, using a % after IPE means that all IPE are considered.
Automation of fabrication drawings
Automatic detection of necessary views
Advance Steel detects which view(s) to create in the fabrication drawings.
Display of slope triangleA slope triangle can be customized with more option than before.
Labels are positioned along objects without overlap.
Weld symbols take up less space for better clarity of drawings.
Interoperability and compatibility
IFC 2x3 Import/ExportIn addition to existing exchange formats, CIS/2, SDNF and PSS, Advance Steel imports and exports the IFC 2x3 format which is the new industry exchange format (Industry Foundation Classes).
Compatibility with 64-bit systems
Advance Steel 8.1 is compatible with
- 64-bit Microsoft Vista
- 64-bit AutoCAD® 2008
Advance Steel received a compatibility certificate for Microsoft client and Microsoft Office.
Multiple versions installed on the same computer
Multiple versions of version 8.1 can be installed on the same computer, for example, the French and English versions.
In addition, version 8.1 can be installed on a computer that has version 7.1 and either version can be used. (Warning: a project created in version 8.1 cannot be opened in version 7.1.)

Installation requirements
To successfully install Advance Steel certain requirements have to be met:

- PC with Pentium Processor min. 2 GHz (4 GHz recommended)
- Main memory min. 2 GB
- AutoCAD® compatible graphics-card (for more information, see: http://www.autodesk.com/autocad-graphicscard)
- Min. 1 GB free disk space on the hard disk
- Network adapter

- Operating system Windows 2000, Windows XP Professional or Windows Vista
- AutoCAD® 2004, ADT 2004, AutoCAD® 2005, ADT 2005, AutoCAD® 2006, ADT 2006, AutoCAD® 2007, ADT 2007, AutoCAD® 2008 or AutoCAD® Architecture 2008.
- TCP/IP Protocol
- The license file is delivered by e-mail.
Advance Steel certifications
GRAITEC is an active member of the DSTV standard association and our software creates NC code that is 100% compatible with most North American (and worldwide) machinery manufacturers. The following manufacturers have confirmed their full compliance to the DSTV standard and are cooperating with us to further streamline the design to fabrication process.
Also Advance Steel users can use KISS (“Keep It Simple, Steel”) files to transfer data from the model and the bill of material between Advance Steel and fabrication management software applications like FABTROL. Advance Steel has been certified by FABTROLfor its ability to exchange data using the KISS file format.
Since the 7.1 version, Advance Steel is certified as Microsoft Client and MS Office compliant. The testing defined by the Microsoft Platform Test for ISV Software Solutions was conducted by VeriTest, a testing service of Lionbridge Technologies.
Advance Concrete compliancy
100% AutoCAD® ! Advance Steel uses Object ARX to its fullest potential. This advanced Autodesk technology provides users with professional objects such as beams, columns, bars perfectly integrated into AutoCAD® on which most standard functions can be applied (copy, paste, extend, trim, stretch, etc.). The native file format of Advance suites is a 100% Autodesk compliant DWG file that may be used on any AutoCAD® station.
