Two ambitious projects, winners of the GRAITEC Achievements Competition 2010, designed with Advance Concrete.

Extension of Flamanville nuclear power station - TPF Engineering, Brussels, Belgium

TPF Engineering, Brussels, Belgium EDF, the French utility company, is extending its nuclear power station of Flamanville in Brittany, France, with one extra nuclear reactor. TPF Engineering, a Belgian design office, is in charge of the nuclear auxiliaries building, which has a support function for the reactor. The building has 11 floors, ~1200m2 each.

Project main challenges:
The structure is entirely defined by the constraints related to the reactor support: there is no global approach to the structure, no repeated floor, and numerous openings.
The proximity of the reactor implies very dense reinforcement (average 120kg/m3 and up to 300kg/m3). Safety constraints imply numerous administrative measures. The restricted area is very densely occupied, which makes the assembly complex on site. Short lead-time allows a very limited margin of error.
The customer has high expectancies regarding the quality of drawings, and modifications are often done to the project. Moreover, the coordination of drawings is difficult with 13 people working on the project.

Advance Concrete solutions:
Improved visual style and possibility to assign miscellaneous colors for bar categories, which allows a clear overview of the project. Use of labels on distribution bars for specific notes and bar specifications indexes. Nomenclature is adapted depending on the labels.
Possibility to create customized templates and customized libraries to ensure a common working method. Reinforcement of external AutoCAD® models in Advance Concrete.

Evelyne Lacroix, TPF Engineering design office: "Advance Concrete included all the requirements for this project. There are always at least two possibilities to process data. The software enabled a clear communication among the participants with the specification of design settings. We could find our way around in the project just with the colors. All the techniques of the drawing board can be found in Advance Concrete."

A Residential Building with a complex structure, located in a highly urbanized area.

Project main challenges:
The structure is complex, with unusual angles and slanted sides.
High expectations of the architects as to details, but little consideration to technical constraints.
The customer expects high quality drawings, with a "nice" aspect and easily understandable to someone who does not know the project. The project is long to design and the drawings are long to produce.

Advance Concrete solutions:
The volumes are well rendered and Advance Concrete enables a clear overview of the project.
The design to scale enables clear understanding at any time.
The software makes it easy to spot the load problems and other collisions.
The automatic piling up function allows time saving.
The drawing is efficient and it is possible to get a first shot rapidly. The isometrics are fast.
