The French building of Shanghai's 2010 Universal Exhibition, designed with Advance Design & Effel by C&E Engineering

Bièvres, France, May 26th, 2010 - GRAITEC, a major worldwide developer for analysis has been chosen by C&E Engineering in 2008, a structural and civil engineering designer located in Paris, to design the French building of Shanghai's 2010 Universal Exhibition . Shanghai 2010 aims to become the most important exhibition of all time.

Organised from May 1st, until October 31st 2010, the exhibition, where 100,000 millions visitors are expected according to the organizers, is about to become one of the most popular exhibition in Shanghai. "Better city, better life", was given to represent the idea and the general topic of this exhibition, which consists of: promoting the crossbreeding of the different cultures, the prosperity of the urban economy, the innovation technical and scientific, the restructuring of the urban communities and the interaction between the city and the country side.

The French building has been designed by C&E Engineering, a French company of 20 employees, specialized in structural and civil engineering design. In fact, Jacques FERRIER project has been selected in March 2008, among 47 international architect projects for this exhibition in Shanghai. He invented a concept, "the sensual city" which aims to set up the idea of a "balance", between "technical nature" and "simplicity", "innovation and quality" or "city" and "territory". This concept will bring about to giving a remarkable and memorable image/identity of France within the framework of the exhibition.

GRAITEC software, Effel & Advance Design, have been used by C&E Engineering to create the 3D model for the building design. The specificities of the project were the following: a complexity of the bracing system and of the structure made of beams and nodes, a multi-material structure and a temperature effects on the structure (positioning of the expansion joints). Using Effel & Advance Design enabled to bring a 3D modeling of complex geometries, a quality of the documents and an automatic post processing results update of the project.

Jean Marc WEILL, director of C&E Engineering comments: Calculation time is definitely not the first that comes to one's mind when talking about an architecture project. Yet, it is not to be underestimated, especially in the final steps, when it comes to optimizing the structure. Indeed, the shorter calculation time is, the more tests you will be able to run, making sure to avoid any major damage that could occur to the building.
Nowadays, calculation is no longer strictly for specialized engineers, since computers have made this task more simple. With 3D models, engineers can literally see how the building works, almost as easy as if they were actually in the building. And this is exactly how ADVANCE Design, with its intuitive interface, assisted us on this project.
