Projects of the Month
ONDREJ NEPELA WINTER STADIUM – INGSTEEL Spol, Slovakia

Advance Steel Project: ONDREJ NEPELA WINTER STADIUM

Location: Bratislava, Slovakia
Design office: INGSTEEL Spol

Project description:

The aim of the project was an adaptation of existing buildings to the organization of the World Championship in ice hockey in 2011. The capacity was increased by 1740 seats (total capacity of 9775 seats) by removal of internal columns after renovation. The integration of modern technology has significantly increased user comfort.

The design of the steel structure is a self-supporting cross-system due to the low resistance of the original concrete structure. The mutual spacing of typical intermediate frames is 10.0 m. The reconstructed hall has a footprint 86.0 x 102.08 m. The theoretical maximal height of the hall is 23.30 m in the center of the span. New crosslinks circumvent original concrete tribunes. Girders with spans of 4.775 + 76.45 + 4.775 = 86.0 m have lenticular shape. The theoretical height of trusses in the middle of the range is 6.0 m, the height above the column area is 2.103 m. Consumption steel structures of the main hall is 2.567 tons, corrugated sheets as formwork have 13.250 square meters.

CAPITAL GATE ABU DHABI – WAAGNER-BIRO STAHLBAU AG, Austria

Location: Abu Dhabi, UAE
Design office: Waagner-Biro Stahlbau AG
Architecture office: RMJM Dubai (Robert Matthew and Johnson Marshall)
Contracting authority: ADNEC (Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Center)

Capital Gate is a skyscraper in Abu Dhabi adjacent to the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre designed with a striking lean. At 160 m (520 ft.) and 35 stories, it is one of the tallest buildings in the city and features an 18-degree incline to the west. The owner and developer of Capital Gate is Abu Dhabi National Exhibitions Company.

The tower has a polygonal ground area and curls and twists its glass-cladding for one degree per level. Waagner-Biro Stahlbau AG modeled, created, produced and assembled this 24 m cantilever cladding with Advance Steel.

The most important challenges were geometric optimization of the freeform surface, programming for steel and glass elements, prefabrication in Europe, transportation to the UAE, assembling of the single parts at the construction site, assembly of the Diamonds at the cantilever areas and doing all of this in a very short time period.

Capital Gate houses the 5-star Hyatt Capital Gate hotel and additional office space.

MAISON DU VOLCAN – I2M, France

Location: Réunion Island (Indian Ocean)
Design office: I2M

The Volcano Museum is a place of scientific and technical culture focused around the central theme of the world of volcanoes especially of the Piton de la Fournaise Volcano. Open to the public since November 1992, the Reunion Council has decided to give the Volcano Museum a new impetus and make it “a prime tourist attractive place”. It is in that context that the company RIEFFEL, contractor of the renovation and extension of the Volcano Museum project, has requested i2M, the structural engineering office, to work on the building execution studies. The building consists of 5 pyramids joined together (2 + 3). The bearing structure made of hot-dip galvanized coated metal frame is red as the volcanic lava color.

It is to meet this challenge and the particular shape requested by the architect that i2M has used the CAD software Advance Steel in order to model in 3D the entire structure including facing glass panels and concrete foundations. In fact, the complexity of this project, the multitude of small parts needed to fix the glasses and to evacuate rainwater has been achieved with the use of Advance Steel and the possibilities to have 3D and rendering work. Without Advance Steel it would have been impossible to lead such a project on time and without errors in the workshop or on site.

According to Jean-Marc Bouchut, Founder and Managing Director of BET STRUCTURES i2M, "The contribution of Advance Steel has been crucial in the effective management of the project whose complexity is matched with its originality. Advance Steel has supported us in this project and has enabled us to combine inventiveness and technical constraints."

Smooth data transfer between Revit and GRAITEC Advance

Using GRAITEC BIM Connect and the Autodesk Revit suite (Autodesk Revit Architecture / Autodesk Revit Structure) will allow you to achieve a continuous CAD / Design process, from architectural design to the final construction drawings.

The interface with Autodesk Revit Structure and Autodesk Revit Architecture is made possible because GRAITEC products are fully BIM oriented. GRAITEC implemented its BIM technology so each real object has a virtual counterpart with accurate associated properties and behavior. Using BIM, GRAITEC provides an optimal solution for accelerated creation of the structural analysis model and automatic creation of drawings, bill of materials and lists. This BIM technology increases general productivity and reduces errors during the entire design to construction process.

GRAITEC BIM Connect was also reviewed by Autodesk and is now available for free in the Autodesk Exchange for Autodesk Revit for all Revit users.
The release is also available on www.graitec.com/revit.

For Manuel Liedot, Chief Product Officer at Graitec: "The partnership with Autodesk is key in the Graitec strategy to deliver BIM to structural engineers and detailers. Construction professionals now have powerful tools for going from structural engineering with Revit to structural analyses, design and detailing with Advance Design, Advance Steel and Advance Concrete."

As a possible workflow, you can start modeling your steel structure in Autodesk Revit then export it to Advance Steel where you can apply one of the numerous automatic connections available in the Connection vault, and then export back the 3D model as a *.gtcx file to Autodesk Revit where the synchronization process gives you all the control on changed elements so that you can easily and automatically get your 3D model updated including all secondary parts such as plates which are part of your connections.
