Service Pack 2 of Advance Steel 2011 is released!

Service Pack 2 of Advance Steel 2011 comes with a set of enhancements and provides the following advantages to end-users:

More efficient modeling: Service Pack 2 brings a powerful set of enhancements with various automated and parametric joint connections provided by default within Advance Steel. Such enhancements help users to model their 3D models faster.

Enhanced update of all documents: As a core functionality of Advance Steel, a modification in the 3D model automatically updates all the documents affected by the modification. Service Pack 2 improves the management of user modifications done directly in the general arrangement and workshop drawings before the automatic update completes. Productivity and drawing consistency are consequently improved.

Better collaboration: Advance Steel delivers the highest level of communication with other solutions in a BIM environment. Service Pack 2 extends possibilities of BIM exchange thanks to a set of new formats requested by our worldwide community of users.

Projects of the Month

STEAM CRACKING FURNACES - HEURTEY Petrochem, France/Romania
 
HEURTEY Petrochem Two ethylene cracking furnaces for the Gonfreville plant in Normandy were made as part of the modernization project for the steam cracker.

Description of the project:

In September 2009, the HEURTEY Group won a major contract in the Petrochemicals sector from Total Petrochemicals. This contract covers the supply of two ethylene cracking furnaces for the Gonfreville plant in Normandy and is part of a modernization project of the steam cracker completed in September 2011.
HEURTEY Petrochem has used technology from Shaw Energy and Chemicals (Stone & Webster) to complete this turnkey contract, which includes on-site assembly work.
Heurtey Petrochem Romania is the main detailing design office of the HEURTEY Group, and were fully involved in this project, with 30 engineers and technicians specializing in the mechanical design of furnaces and trained in the use of GRAITEC Advance Steel 3D design software.
The two furnaces, pipe rack and steel structures are prefabricated and manufactured by Beta-Heurtey, the Group's Romanian fabrication workshop.


The main challenges of the project:

The two steam cracking furnaces represent a highly complex assembly of steel structures which required special joints and detailing.


The Advance Steel solution:

Some specific joints were developed by GRAITEC for Heurtey Petrochem taking into consideration their particular type of connections, this allowed for an easier and very user-friendly 3D modeling in Advance Steel.
The customization of the settings and users database was produced so that it can be shared and used by all of the engineers from the whole group, with a reduced individual creation time assured even higher efficiencies.
The Advance Steel drawing styles setup (used for the automatic drawing creation) were adapted in order to correspond to the detailed requirements of Heurtey Petrochem. The process pipes created with CADWorks software were attached to the main structure as external references and this allowed the Advance Steel operators to do a complete steel structure and process piping clash detection check on screen.
The good Interoperability between Advance Steel and a 3rd parties analysis software allowed for the correct and accurate calculation of the steel support structure.

ICE RINK in Luxemburg - SST Ingenieurbüro für Stahlbau, Germany

Client: Patinoire de Beaufort
Architect: Kiefer. Textile Architektur
Dimensions: 65 m wide x 70 m long x 18 m high;
Roofed area: 2.400 m2
Specifications:
         total weight of the 5 Pylons = 60 tons;
         total weight of the framework = 20 tons;
         approx. 90 tons sectional steel for the supporting structure
 

Description of the project:

The Patinoire de Beaufort, once the only open air ice rink in Luxembourg, now finally has a roof. After several months of work on the 11th November to the delight of the IHC Beaufort Ice Hockey team and the people of the town, the new all-weather rink was opened


The main challenges of the project:

The new roof of the ice stadium consists of a textile membrane, which is fixed at the top of 3 pylons. On the outside frame, the roof is hold by a curved triangle truss and the other 3 sides are sustained by 2 pylons with ropes.

The Advance Steel solution:

Thanks to its 3D approach and its BIM interoperability facilities, it was easy to get the tensile roof inserted into the Advance Steel model. The Advance Steel functions were then used to create the complex steel triangle truss made of pipes, plus all of the welded and bolted connections between the members. All special parts such as tension rods systems were easily inserted for display in the drawings to help improve fabrication and erection on site.
Also the automatic single part detailing of the pipes with Advance Steel's exact unfolding (using inner and/or outer contour) helped ensure that the drawings and NC-files were finished ahead of schedule.

"With such a complex project I would have expected problems, but Advance steel solved all the issues before manufacture, and as it was the first time we have used Advanced Steel I was very impressed with the software." reported Mrs. Margarete Theuerkauf, manager and construction engineer of SST Ing.-Büro für Stahlbau.

 
 
Tip of the Month: how to change an Advance Steel plate to concrete stairs?

Well, "it is easy" (says our French customer BEMMA) = > First create a (large) Advance Steel plate in your 3D model, and then apply various rectangular or polygonal cuts to it in order to define all the steps. (see green symbols below on the picture)

Then your concrete stairs are ready to receive architectural railings on it! Which of course will be modelled with Advance Steel.

International Events - Advance Steel showcased at different exhibitions

Advance Steel showcased at BATIMAT 2011
GRAITEC exhibited at BATIMAT 2011, the international building exhibition was on from the 7 to the 12 November 2011 at Paris, Porte de Versailles. Several of our customers who visited us told us how happy with the product and promised to send us some nice projects that they have recently completed with Advance Steel!

The SAIE 2011 exhibition was organized in Bologna (Italy) from October 5th to 8th 2011. The MADE expo 2011 exhibition was organized in Milano (Italy) from October 5th to 8th 2011. Advance Steel was showcased at these 2 exhibitions.

Advance Steel showcased at RESTA 2011
The RESTA 2011 exhibition - 18th international exhibition for the construction and renovation industry - was organized in Vilnius (Lithuania) and Advance Steel was showcased thanks to our partner in Lithuania, Geobaltus, represented by Linas Gabrielatis.

User meeting in DACH: successful user meeting groups

During November GRAITEC GmbH organized two User Group Meetings for customers from Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

The meetings took place on the 22nd and 29th of November and were held at the historical Kongress Palais in Kassel Germany, and at the offices of one of the biggest GRAITEC customers in Austria, Peneder Holding GmbH.

GRAITEC presented a variety of topics, plus new innovations and features on GRAITEC's Advance Steel, CS-STATIK and Advance Bridge.
Both User Meetings were a great success with altogether more than 140 participants, and many of the users are already looking forward to the next User Group Meeting!

User meeting in Netherlands: organized by MATRIX

A user meeting was organized by MATRIX software, the GRAITEC reseller of Advance Steel in Netherlands on the 29th November for the users from Netherlands and Flemish-speaking area of Belgium. More than 50 end-users were present at this event which took place in Gorinchem (Netherlands).

An overview of the main new features of the coming major release Advance Steel 2012 was given to the audience, and the feedback was very positive about the new functions that this release will bring.

The companies Stageco & Breetec explained in details how they successfully used Advance Steel to model in 3D the impressive stage of the U2 Tour.

Matrix software finished the meeting with the presentation of prizes for the 3 best projects in their 2011 Advance Steel User competition.

Marc Verstraten (from Breetec company), winner of the first prize in the 2011 user contest, explains: "Advance Steel was the right software solution to handle the type of complex project for the conveyor for Arcelor-Mittal, and although the project did not use a lot of the standard connections from Advance Steel, it still was possible to create the complete model with Advance Steel objects.

As more than 50% of the project consists of folded plates we were especially satisfied with the Advance Steel bending and unfolding capabilities, plus also the drawings that Advance Steel produced more than met the accuracy requirements for this type of construction.
We are very proud to win the first prize in the 2011 user contest. It confirms that smaller companies can produce complicated designs and thereby accurately achieve the higher level of complexity required in so many modern design. We will keep improving our skills with Advance Steel by pushing ourselves and the program further to the limit.
